Dietary fiber refers to a carbohydrate polymer that is neither digested nor absorbed in the human small intestine, and is obtained from food with physiological functions. Studies have shown that dietary fiber is negatively associated with the risk of dyslipidemia, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke. Resistant dextrin (RD) is a soluble dietary fiber and prebiotic that is widely used in functional foods and beverages due to its low viscosity and strong water solubility. RD comes from wheat or corn and is rich in alpha-1,4 and alpha-1,6 glucoside bonds.
At present, resistant dextrin has been approved for use in nearly 40 countries such as China, Europe, the United States and Japan. In Japan, resistant dextrin has been widely used as a nutritional fortification agent, and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has identified it as a specific health food material for the government. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes it as a Generally Safe substance (GRAS) and has no limit on intake. Announcement No. 16 of the Ministry of Health in 2012 has listed resistant dextrin as a common food and can be added to various foods in unlimited quantities.
